BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #50 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, Adrián Gutiérrez. Luis Guerrero & Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For this anniversary issue, there are two stories will all-star creative teams behind them. Due to the amount, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.

“Dream Team” by Waid, Mora, Bonvillain, & Wands centers around the world being under the state of “Global Insomnia”. Readers watch as the pair uses a bit of magic to enter the realm of Dr. Destiny. This winds up sending the pair into the deepest thoughts involving their opinions of the other. Waid throws in a good dose of humor into play in dealing with the Batmobile. Their banter turns more serious as the adventure goes onward. The mood shifts when Batman is exposed for some stances he has involving his rogues. This leads to brief friction before fully igniting into the changing point of the story. Once here, the writing rolls into the internal strengths both possess. It leads to a strong finish and perfect closing point for both heroes to walk off from.

Mora returns to the series of this special occasion and delivers per usual. The opening pages tease what the main conflict shall be. This leads into a fast moving dream state. The panels involving the batmobile play into the more light-hearted moments. This leads into more unique panels highlighting the fun in these moments. As things shift to Batman, the visuals carry more weight into the subject matter. Readers watch as past events come into light before moving to the main event. Mora pays homage to the past before allowing Destiny to make a full page entrance. The confrontation leads into a few varying looks before a fantastic two page splash moves events to a finish. Readers can’t ask for a better closing page and panel. Pure cinema on this one.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

“Strum Und Drang” by Waid, Gutiérrez. Guerrero & Wands pits Batgirl and Supergirl in a friendly competition against Robin (Dick Grayson) and Jimmy Olsen. This is a classic set-up of clashing personalities and more hijinx ensuing. The writing locks in on each pair and brings out more personalities in all. Readers will have a good laugh at Supergirl’s reaction involving a Batgirl compliment. This moves events into a more superhero direction. Olsen’s dialogue is a great icebreaker to the tension filling the page. It leads to a great ending and even better epilogue. A solid take to highlight the other “finest” involved.

Gutiérrez & Guerrero start with a great perspective panel of Supergirl and Batgirl coming after Olsen. It leads to a good starting point for the “how we got here” recap. Readers watch as a half page image shows a minor celebration move into more curious quarters. The panels start the competition off with a great half panel of Batman overlooking Gotham. This moves to the world traveling involving the four players. As events shift towards their discoveries, Supergirl’s “reaction” panel steals attention with great lettering from Wands. The main antagonist here debuts with a stunning full page. Action panels flow quickly, leading to a superb finish. The final page cements the completion of the game and do the victors really get the spoils? Not if the real Finest have their say.

FINAL GRADE: 9

“World’s Finest” never ceases to remind readers what great superhero stories can be in this modern age. Waid delivers two incredible tales highlighting the differences and strengths of te iconic heroes and supporting cast. Each art team delivers on amazing visuals that look anything but average. This is a celebration that readers need to join the party for!
