BATMAN /GREEN ARROW /THE QUESTION : ARCADIA #4 (DC COMICS)

The end of the road has come for a trio of heroes.

Batman. Green Arrow. The Question. All three have united under very different circumstances. Assassination attempts. Human trafficking. Dirty business dealings. What is supposed to be a utopia is far from that in reality.

With their distinct personas, teamwork has been few and far between. With Rotha sending all his forces after the trio and any resistance, their combined might isn’t a lock for victory.

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #4 by Gabriel Hardman, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Simon Bowland (DC Comics) concludes its’ Black Label saga.

Let’s see how the finale plays out.

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #4 by Gabriel Hardman, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Simon Bowland (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Hardman puts the trio in a questionable corner for this final chapter. The escape from Rotha’s forces is frantic and loud. There’s no apologies for the brutal action takign hold. once pacing slows down, the story falls back into a more comfortable state. Queen’s grilling of Batman allows friction to heighten more. This helps cast a new look on the Dark Knight. No longer is he in control of a situation. There is a word swirling around him in this scenario: fear. Fortunately one hero is using that feeling as motivation.

Vic Sage has been the standout character in this entire run. The writing moves him into joining a fateful last run to Arcadia. It leads into more chaos while the rescue attempt takes over panels. Readers watch as their plan hits a few snags before dancing into the final stand. In this stage, Batman addresses his adversary in a most unique way. Where prior his concerns were of his own secrets, Hardman allows Bruce Wayne a moment of vulnerability. This results into lighting the match on a much larger powder keg. It gives proper perspective to the true combat at hand, leading to a solid finish of moral dilemmas. The epilogue forces one drastic action to supersede the rest. Readers are left with much to reflect on as the story transitions into yesteryear. A gritty finale that lives to billing.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

The art hones in on the gritty attempt for freedom. An incredible full image shows Batman deflecting a copter’s bullets with his cowl. The intensity is so high on this page, it can’t be ignored. This leads into a more tension filled conversation of what’s next. Queen’s scowl doesn’t back down from Batman’s dominant presence. It adds to the problems they have had from the offset. Queen can also sense the uncertainty in Wayne’s delivery. This aura of mistrust expands further was Sage takes matters into his own hands.

Readers get a quick dose of action as the panels show the Question handling a guard. This opens the playbook even more as all roads lead back to Arcadia. A bold full page shows a united front launching into the final stand. The action carries onward to an impressive two page splash of Batman valiantly fighting. The wear and tear on his body is unavoidable. It leads to a heavier encounter and equally impactful response in face-off. From here, pacing revs up to bring down everything involving this last stand. The sheer shock in Wayne’s face speaks volumes as events fall apart. Where his moral code never buckled, his sense of duty should have. This leads into a more calm closing act, but not without one last twist in the story. A reflective final page answers some lingering notions before the closing image ties everything all together.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The combustible alliance of vigilantes hits its’ breaking point as hope fades fast. Hardman tests the resolve of even the greatest hero with a strong script. The art leans into the bursting problems with loud action to follow suit. A great story which unloads on the grit and determination of impossible odds.
