FROM THE WORLD OF MINOR THREATS: ARCHIE VS. MINOR THREATS #4 by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, Timmy Heague, Scott Koblish, Hi-Fi, & Nate Piekos (Dark Horse Comics/Archie Comics)
***Minor Spoilers Possible***
Heague and company pull out all the stops for this one! The opening scene is chaotic with Frankie trying to fight her way through the zombie mob. That’s not a typo & I’m here for it!. Watching Archie fight a werewolf Jughead is as wild as one would expect. During this play, Follis finally breaks Archie out of his trance. It should lead to a quick remedy to their issues. This leads to a teenaged Top Hat swooping in to interfere. Kidnapping Scalpel is another element added into the combustible mix. It spirals into a desperate chase to find Mary before trouble is caused. That is easier said than done.
A Vampire Veronica causes Mary to disappear. Once the crew arrives, the effects of the displacement start snapping back. Readers watch as this portion is tied up pretty quickly. It helps set up the back end of the finale. Archie and Frankie must work together to free Sabrina. This leads to another wholesome moment where the Archie style of storytelling comes through strong. Top Hat has one last trick left up his sleeve. Playing it causes a very solid conclusion to their ordeal. The epilogue is perfect to move all parties forward. Frankie and Archie’s dialogue is one of respect but leaves the door open for possibilities. Great finish.
Koblish and Hi-Fi leave it all on the pages of this one. The opening page is a full shot displaying “the Threats” fighting their way in the zombie herd. Archie and Jughead are given a great look during their supernatural brawl. It’s quickly wiped away when Top Hat casts his spell. Readers see the dramatic measures taken to kidnap Scalpel. The Archie snap back to reality gets a very stacked half panel. It doesn’t come a moment too soon as events are slipping away.
The art team has a lot of fun with flipping character personas with this one. Watching Vampire Veronica let loose makes for a crazy page. Its’ aftermath starts reverting some of the characters back to their normal versions. "Poor Barfly.” Koblish’s skills about making certain character look like Archie-verse while their counterparts look more realistic is a true gift. It really sold the part of worlds colliding. Panels are jammed pack as Sabrina evolves into the “Witch Knight”. The blistering pace continues till the Top Hat conclusion. They cover a good range of emotions leading to the full page finish. The epilogue is more traditional in set-up. It sends both leads and their universes back to normal with a hint of “what if” in the air. Incredible detailed work.
OVERALL GRADE: 9.5/10
Archie and Playtime must find a way to work together to stop the terrifying darkness unleashed from taking over both their lives. Heague and the team bring out the best and worst of Riverdale and Twit=light City’s finest. Koblish’s stellar art constructs many different looks as the group tries finding a way back to normal. This finale is a creative show-stopper that shouldn’t be missed.
