*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Thompson puts Diana through a painful test of will with this latest challenge. The opening scene shows Cale’s weapon poised to strike. Diana’s noble play buys enough time to focus its’ attention on her. The writing shows the difficulties in her attack. While she’s been able to utilize her powers before, the effort is quickly nullified. This leads into a very dark path. Cale’s stone dialogue clashes with Diana’s frantic soul search for answers. The writing structures this moment very well. It is not one without a detour with grave consequences.

Readers watch as Hades and Persephone have a personal conversation. Their words reflect the emotions involved with failed love. It is a powerful moment to break Diana’s current plight up but not before coming into her storyline with a vengeance. Cale’s victory continues to push boundaries in its’ fallout. The writing unveils the ruthlessness involved with Cale’s quest. One character’s fate is sealed as plans for her begin. The final act shows the crushing impact of Hades’ move. It leaves events in a tragic place with many ramifications to follow. Excellent work.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

Sherman and Bellaire pen with the battle of Gateway City. A strong full page shot shows Diana putting the matter’s weight on her shoulders. This leads into a pair excellent two page spreads showing Diana’s fight. Readers watch as Diana’s capture rolls into a dire picture. The frustration and doubt on her face is haunting. It is balanced by Cale’s cold reactions. A terrifying attack hits Diana with a full page image. Seeing her screaming in pain leaves an impression before moving into the Hades portion.

The personal talk between he and Persephone is given a full image. Bellaire’s exquisite coloring takes over this sequence. Seeing the two gods in this manner is deceptive in nature. It provides a solid break from Diana’s troubles. A full page image shakes everything up for the Absolute Warrior. This becomes a spiraling point as Cale’s directive takes another turn. Seeing her manipulations take hold sends a chill through the panels. This builds up to a magnificent final image to close events with.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

Diana’s heroic attempt to save the Zataras leads her into a path of sorrow in an incredible story finale. Thompson’s writing nails the pressure breaking Diana during this conflict. Sherman and Bellaire create superb visuals to ensnare readers along the way. This series always finds ways to raise the bar of storytelling.
