ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #1 by Pornsak Pichetshote, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcelo Maiolo & Jeff Powell (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Pichetshote dives further into the uncomfortable circumstances centered around Dinah Lance to begin events. Her tortured reaction to processing all that’s happened makes a bold statement. This energy carries into the public perception of events. Readers watch as the public is mixed on how to react. It leads Dinah and Malcom Merlyn to a confrontation with Mia Dearden. The writing plays this off with a quirky sparring match. It serves as a pace break between flashback and present drama.

In the melee, a huge bombshell of info is dropped. Merlyn’s reaction is devious as he attempts to process this. This becomes a major factor in the book’s progression. Dinah’s determination leads her to another major discovery. Her conversation with a Queen relative spurns with venom as old emotions come to light. Pichetshote puts this on a tee before swinging big on the way to close. As the killer arrives on the scene, readers have more questions surrounding his latest actions. It poses Lance in a very uneasy place. The killer’s presence also disrupts events as drastic actions are taken. The writing adds more cold dialogue into play before heading to close. Pichetshote throws in one more shock before departing. What an ever-winding road readers are on now.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Albuquerque & Maiolo open with an upsetting look at Dinah’s nightmares. They factor in the bloody nose stains with a creative twist. Using them as reflective puzzle pieces elevates the mystery of the “Green Arrow”. The Cell Phone panel set-up works again to create a solid look into the temp of the public. It is a subtle technique but this is where the art truly shines. Once events get to Mia’s sparring session, they slow down to let this portion work itself out.

Maiolo’s coloring hits its’ target with the flashbacks. The lighter shade of green ctaches eyes as it raises more attention to Oliver’s questionable days. The sparring session panels are fine to break up some looks. This moves events into Dinah’s search for another possible suspect. The mood is tense with every action ready to explode. A frightening half panel sets up another guest crashing the party. An exquisite full page image welcomes the Green Arrow into the fray. It speeds up the action while throwing devastating loss into play. A strong half panel shows another side to the killer. It provides a path to the questioning close. The final panel raises more thoughts as this mystery is getting started.
