Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest.
ABSOLUTE FLASH #20 by Jeff Lemire, Haining , Adriano Lucas & Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Lemire delves into the mythos of the Atom with surprising results. The opening pages spill his origin with much wonder behind it. It presents Palmer with a certain arrogance behind his story. There’s no doubting of his intelligence. This factor is driven more home when talking with Wally and Linda Park. There are points which come across borderline insulting. Linda’s responses convey the same sentiment. It’s a weird pitch but works to establish a new look to Palmer and his machinations.
Readers watch as the story switches gears with Zoom and the D.E.O. The tone gets much more serious in delivery as the devious natures come out. This leads into a startling act to put more pressure on Wally west’s shoulders. This strikes a nerve before leading back to West and his current problems. Palmer’s aggressive stances put Linda Park into a new path of discovery. This builds up to a startling discovery to conclude vents with more mistrust in the air. Suffice to say, there’s no easy path to cross from this point.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Haining & Lucas begin with a solid full shot of Atom in costume and working. Pages start walking back his origin as a scientist. They carry a powerful sci-fi feel as Palmer walks through his progressions. This leads to a full discovery page that shows much curiosity at play. Another full page brings all parties involved back to reality. Palmer’s body language connects his overconfidence as he talks down to his new companions.
As events move back to Central City, the art carries a much more grounded look. Zoom’s interactions with Director Bones conflict as they try figuring a plan out. The result is a very intense half panel showing their notorious methods. This one is sure to draw a reaction out of readers. Once the story moves back to Palmer, his reactions are very cold as he speaks with a beaten West. This progresses to a shocking discovery by Park and Grodd. The full page reveal is a showstopper, putting Palmer’s anger to the test. It caps off a very steady run of drama leading into new territory.
FINAL POINT: 8.5
The Absolute vision of Ray Palmer comes into focus while more mystery abounds! Lemire throws a few new looks into play with a solid script. Haining and Lucas construct vivid looks at the science-driven figure’s perspective with the art. Brace for who else makes an absolute impact this issue!
