ABSOLUTE CATWOMAN #1 by Scott Snyder, Che Grayson, Bengal , Giovanna Niro & Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder & Grayson expand Kyle’s case with some new “frienemies” while getting some clarity on looming questions. The opening sequence shows a happier time with Kyle and Holly. it is easy to see their friendship bloom into a foundation for both. Once events jump to present, Kyle’s thievery gets to stand out. Readers watch as she sets her bait for Holly’s kidnappers. This leads to a more combustible situation to unfold.

The flashback to Kyle’s gang robbing the crime families adds to the connection with Holly. Watching the group pull the heist is more casual than anticipated. There isn’t a huge sense of drama in this portion, more of a direct point to turn from. It ushers in the present con taking place for information. Kyle’s charade is offset by a slew of run-ins. Readers watch as the group is thrown into a more complex area. It provides a great run of action before moving to close. The final pages unveils the mystery behind Kyle’s troubles with more curiusity to follow. A safe parting spot to continue from indeed.

Bengal and Niro open with a rare glimpse of happier times with Kyle and Holly. Their rooftop moment is a solid showcase of their bond. This allows the timejump to have more substance as Kyle begins her play. Th espionage panels help craft the scene as more parties become involved. Just as things get settled here, the story dives back into the past with Kyle’s groups heist of the families.

Readers watch as the scenes develop a more care-free plan that lacks a sense of seriousness. With Kyle’s group smiling through the entire run, it never feels like their work is anything more than a formality in this stage. This changes completely when Kyle’s cover is blown in the present time. The art ramps up the pacing for a solid sequence of high action spots. Kyle’s fight with a certain assailant has all the drama needed to connect with the audience. It pushes events towards a steady finish. As the pieces of the puzzle come together, a heavier sense of purpose fills the page. It leaves readers with a few images to ponder heading into next round.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Selina’s chase for who took Holly takes a few turns in this latest chapter. Snyder and Grayson lean into the friendships Kyle has made throughout the years. Bengal and Niro never shy away form staging loud action. Fans will want to have this on the radar at the shops.
