BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER - SEASON 2 REVIEW (PRIME VIDEO)
Welcome back to a new vision of Gotham City.
In the summer of 2024, a new animated series was making its’ long awaited debut. Whenever you have Batman as the lead character, the bar will automatically be set extremely high. This is due to the success of arguably the greatest Superhero animated series of all time: Batman: The Animated Series (1992).
Since that series conclusion, fans have been looking for shows that can tell Batman stories in the same style and feel on television/streaming.This only became more intense with the success ofMatt Reeves’ film, The Batman in 2022.
Coinciding with the film’s release was the announcement of “Batman: Caped Crusader” in 2021. This new project had heavyweight exec. producers like JJ Abrams (Bad Robot), Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) & the previous mentioned Reeves attached to the project. The project was opted out by Warner Bros. Discovery & picked up by Amazon Studios for Prime Videoin 2022.
August 2024 saw the release of the first season of “Batman: Caped Crusader”. Led by Hamish Linklater (Batman/Bruce Wayne) voicing the title role, the series was a smash success. It combined elements of the classic BTAS format with a slightly grittier tone. Shortly after Season One’s release, season two was announced to be forthcoming.
Season 2 debuted on July 31st on Prime Video. Here is our review!

*** SERIES REVIEW *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
With the wait between seasons, there was much to speculate about how this season would go. With it’s premiere episode “Brute Force”, a tone was set early that the stakes were much higher. This is in large part to the presence of The Joker (voiced by Matthew Needham). Adding the greatest Batman villain of them all served as a game changer. This complimented the other rogues getting a healthy storyline this season. Eddie Nygma (“Riddler” - Ronan Raftery) is the prime recipient of a large spotlight. However, his character goes through arguably the biggest change from comics to screen.
Using Nygma as Rupert Thorne (Cedric Yarbrough)’s enforcer is a stretch from the intellectual foe fans know. The show portrayed him as an unstable thug with a huge thirst for power. Putting him in this position is a stretch but with Thorne’s arc playing out as it did, the writers leaned into his cunningness to uplift moments. As the season went on, this character’s progression seemed off in comparison to other rogues. This was rectified before the finale but a polarizing take never the less.
Another drastic change was Hattie Tetch (Laraine Newman). Portraying Tetch as a talk show host worked on a surprisingly positive manner. Her commentary of the criminal activity in Gotham served as a needed asset in other nefarious actions. This was a much more organic change that didn’t dismay too much as the season went on. Taking chances also worked as other stories benefited from the risks.

Arguably the season’s best episode was “"The Spectral Hand". Knowing J. M. DeMatteis was leading the writing for this was a fantastic choice to bring this supernatural look to life. Anytime Jim Corrigan is involved, it is always tricky. Having him in this “Year Two” era gave Barbara Gordon (Krystal Joy Brown) a standout episode amongst her strong performances this season. It’s a captivating look at right and wrong with extreme justice involved. This is sure to be a fan pleaser.
"Zero Hour" provided a more wholesome look (as far as this era gets) at the tough streets of Gotham City due to one incredible performance. Carrie Kelley (Juliet Donenfeld) gives viewers a sensational argument of why Batman needs a Robin. The episode captures youthful innocence trying to do good. There are a few scenes thrown back to “The Dark Knight Returns” comic that won’t escape sharp eyes. Harvey Bullock (John DiMaggio)’s threating ways stand no chance in this moment. This future dynamic duo provides a needed break from the intense drama swirling around Batman as he heads into the terrifying finale.

Where Linklater shines as Batman is when the Joker strikes in the final two episodes ("Dead Before Dawn" & "The Laughing Death"). The actor has done a great job with the role in both seasons, but something about when challenged by Needham’s Joker brings out more from the performance. Maybe it’s due to the gravity of the crime taking place. The feel of the season leans into more graphic violence for a large part of the season. This provides a solid progression for what we get in these latter episode.
For these two episodes, a horror feel steers the Batship. Fans watch as the two rivals keep trying to break the other. It’s vintage Batman/Joker conflict that doesn’t miss on delivery. The supporting cast (esp. Alfred Pennyworth (Jason Watkins), James Gordon (Eric Morgan Stuart) & Renee Montoya (Michelle C. Bonilla) rallies around the fear theme as the battle leads to a superb finish. As there has been no official announcement for season 3 yet, watching the ten episodes play out with such high quality makes a compelling case for renewal.
FINAL GRADE: 9
The streets of Gotham City prove to be no laughing matter as Batman’s greatest foe arrives in a spectacular sophomore season. Linklater delivers an incredible performance with the growing violence and dangers Batman faces. Needham commands scenes when The Joker speaks. Paired with an exceptional supporting cast, this vintage era of The Dark Knight creates an experience that is simply can’t miss.
