ZATANNA #3 by Jamal Campbell & Ariana Maher (DC COMICS) (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As far as story goes, Campbell takes the story into imaginative places for this round. Her encounter with Guede Noibo is playful yet shrouded in mystery. It breaks up the more shocking tone of the start of the issue. Once the dialogue between both start, it separates matters to get Zatanna moving in the right direction. The fallout ruffles more ego as the destruction is massive. It fail in comparison to what’s coming.

The trip into the underworld offers up more insight into the overall schemes. Readers watch as the encounter with Persephone and Mnemosyne leads to the encounter fans have been waiting for. Agent Di Manes finds out the hard way about messing with Zatanna’s magic. This leads to a wild encounter where chaos is running free. Readers will be locked in for this right to its’ last moment. The epilogue shows Zatanna poised for another round but not without reflection on what just transpired.

Read last issue’s review!

With Campbell on art, this review might head into broken record territory. There are so many stunning visuals throughout, readers will feast on the enjoyment popping off the pages. A gorgeous two page splash walks Zatanna into her meeting with Nibo. Their exchanges are light-hearted as they barter for information. It steers events into a stunning full page where Zatanna speaks to the audience on the Realms of Magic. A fun nod to readers before events go off the rails.

The encounter with Di Manes is everything one could want. Coloring pops the panels as Zatanna confronts the agent. This spills into a strong half panel of attackers going after the Prime Magus. At this stage, pages go bold as the action has to be visualized to be truly appreciated. Panel structure is key to allow events to feel larger than life. This goes into a spectacular two page splash. Once the smoke clears, the story wraps up on a solid page bringing everything to a stop. The art never misses in this series!

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Agent Di Manes’ attack on Zatanna doesn’t go unanswered as the Prime Magus is ready to fight. Campbell pens a strong story backed by simply amazing art. It’s a 1-2 combo that can’t be matched in dealing with the extremely unique look of magic in the DCU.
