What If…? Captain America (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the FIRST issue of What if…? Captain America

What if Captain America was revived in 2099? It’s a simple premise but one that is profoundly interesting in concept. Let’s jump into it!

The Story

Marc Guggenheim pens an absolutely fantastic story with an incredibly powerful message. The concept is a brillant one, and that’s what would happen if Captain America woke up in 2099 instead of when he was supposed to in the main timeline. It’s an incredibly compelling story that really speaks to the heart of a lot issues people face.

Of course when you have such an interesting premise you have to wonder just what the world is like since Captain America wasn’t there when the world needed him. I won’t spoil the changes you see in the issue because they have to be seen to be believed, but I really feel it’s some of the most incredible ideas ever put to paper in a comic.

I can’t stress enough just how incredible the story is, because of how deep the story goes on a moral level. It’s truly one of the best stories I’ve read in some time.

The Artwork

Ron Lim & Andrew Dalhouse are in charge of the artwork for the issue and it’s some really incredible work. When you get to deal with a What If story, you really get a chance to be creative with how things look and you get to take some swings creatively. They really did an incredible job with the look of every panel. The characters were particularly some of my favorite parts of the entire issue.

Overall Grade: 10/10

A fantastic issue that has an incredible message at it’s core. A story that needs to be experienced by all readers and is a true hallmark of storytelling this year. Marc Guggenheim truly is one of the best storytellers out there.
