Ultimate Spider-Man #24 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 24th issue of Ultimate Spider-Man from Marvel Comics!

We’ve finally reached the final issue of Ultimate Spider-Man! Peter has been going through it for a while now, and this issue is no different! So just how is it going to end? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // Ultimate Spider-Man #24 by Johnathan Hickman (Writer), Marco Checchetto & David Messina (Artists), Matthew Wilson (Color Artist), VC’s Cory Petit (Letterer), Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson (Cover Artists) is an incredible finale that will leave readers satisfied with the ending.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

Jonathan Hickman brings his absolute best for the story in this issue because oh my goodness does it deliver! Hickman delivers on a quintessential Spider-Man story that was an absolute delight to read from start to finish. It has heart, action, adventure, stressful moments, and an ending that feels just perfect.

Obviously the bulk of the issue is the battle between Peter & the Kingpin, but then the other side of that coin is the story with Richard Parker & Felicia Hardy. I really enjoyed the battle and banter between Peter and Wilson Fisk because it felt so familiar to other stories I’d read. It’s nice to know that no matter what universe is in, the banter between the two is just the absolute best.

Then you have the situation Felicia & Richard was really gripping and nerve wracking. I won’t spoil what goes down, but I will say there were a few moments that surprised me and really shocked me with the turns they took. The whole sequence really plays out well when you balance it against Peter’s story and it makes for some compelling reading.

Now as I mentioned before, this is the final issue of the series. So you would expect things to get wrapped up nicely in a little bow and send things off into the sunset, or perhaps leave you with a cliffhanger for some yet to be announced follow up. I won’t divulge what happens in the page because as I always say, you need to read the story for yourself. However I will say that Hickman does wrap up the series in a very nice, satisfying way as a fan of the series. If this is the last we will see of these characters I will say I’m happy with how things ended. But I would be remised if I didn’t say with how they’re ending things that they’re leaving some GREAT material left on the table unused. I should also mention, I have NO IDEA what Marvel is going to do next. So only time will tell.

The Artwork

Marco Checchetto, David Mesina & Matthew Wilson continue to do an incredible great job with the artwork in the issue and continue to give it a classic feel you’ve come to know for the series. To me, the style they set for this series is the definitive look for the universe. It’s the same way I view the early issues of the 2000’s Ultimate Spider-Man. That’s the look, that’s what I’m going to think of in my head when someone brings up this series and this incarnation of the Ultimate universe. I also feel confident in saying it’s the best artwork I have seen this decade and really raised the bar for not only Marvel, but the rest of the comics industry.

FINAL POINT: An absolute masterpiece from Hickman, that you need to put at the top of your reading list. This issue has it all and wraps it up in a way that is sure to please everyone. On top of artwork that sets the standard for the industry, it’s easy to see why the whole creative team is some of the best at their craft.

Overall Grade: 10/10
