Credit: Dark Horse Comics // Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts #1 by Casey Gilly (Script), Antonio Di Caprio (Art), Eren Angiolini (Colors), Andworld Design (Letters) & Taurin Clarke (Cover) is a great start to the series that’s sure to delight fans.

The Story

I really like the set up that Casey Gilly does with the start of this series because it has been a while since we’ve seen Lara Croft. Her last video game & film were released in 2018, and while there was an animated series released on Netflix in 2024 it’s been relatively quiet for the franchise. There is of course another film coming down the road, but this is the latest content fans have had in a few years.

The series takes place after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld which released in 2008 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii & other consoles. It starts off in a great way for anyone who hasn’t kept up with the games, films or comics & is a great entry point for those who aren’t super familiar.

We see Lara giving a tv interview about the recent renovations to Croft manor and some of her recent escapades. Gilly does a great job setting the stage for what’s sure to be a classic Lara Croft story. I really loved how Gilly started the story simply enough with the interview but then expanded on things and introduced us to the antagonist.

The story really has it all if you’re a Lara Croft fan, or a fan of those type of stories. Mystery, intrigue, a secret society with some not good intentions. This series is sure to be a great read from start to finish.

The Artwork

Antonio Di Caprio & Eren Angiolini both did a great job with the art in the issue and helped give it a look and feel long time fans of Lara Croft are sure to be familiar with. The panels taking place during Lara’s archeological expedition particularly were great and helped set the tone for the series spectacularly.

FINAL POINT: Casey Gilly starts off the series to a roaring start that is sure to be the talk of longtime Lara Croft fans. It’s a super easy read, even if you haven’t kept up with the Lara Croft franchise recently. Together with fantastic artwork from Antonio & Eren, this is an issue you shouldn’t pass up on.

Overall Grade: 8/10
