STORY OVERVIEW:

We are introduced to Thomas Noble Townsend III, a third-generation wealthy kid whose family is in the band-aid business. His grandfather believed in being humble and not flaunting your wealth, as well did his parents. But the 13-year-old Thomas believes in showing his wealth and using it to make others happy. This is mostly good and well received but also has its detractors. We learn that his parents were obsessed with something and this led them to become missing. Now, Thomas is tracking down The Unbelievables to find out what happened to his parents and hopefully bring them home. Will he accomplish his goals and how will The Unbelievables play into all of this?

WRITING:

The first issue of The Trillion Dollar Kid gives us a backstory to explain the character we were introduced to in the zero issue of The Rocketfellers. Geoff Johns & Peter Tomasi give us a good origin story for Thomas, which shows us who he is and what drives him. The backstory on his family and their wealth gives us an idea of how they are as people. The way Thomas takes a different approach from the rest of his family when it comes to money shows that he is his own person and that he looks at the world in a different way. But at its heart this is a series that is based around a son trying to find his family, while going on an adventure to recruit strange and powerful allies. As this series continues and this universe grows it seems that this character will play a massive role in it.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this first issue brings the world to life and keeps the identity of the other stories in this universe that have already come out. Stefano Simeone crafts the world in a very family friendly cartoony style. This matches the aesthetic of this all ages universe. The character designs look great and definitely help you realize how the people in this world live. The backgrounds are very detailed and bring this world to life. Simeone also chooses some great colors, which compliment the artwork and draw your eyes to the panels.

Final Thoughts:

The Trillion Dollar Kid #1 is good kickoff to this series and new shared universe. The introduction to the glue that holds this universe together gives the reader a real sense of where the series and universe are headed. I for one am very interested in seeing where this series goes, as well as the whole Unbelievables Universe. This is a book, series, and universe that the whole family can enjoy. Give this series a try and grab a copy of issue one at the LCS this week.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6/10
