THE OLYMPIAN #2 (ACORN COMICS)

THE OLYMPIAN #2 by PAUL EZA, DEE FISH & IBRAHIM AYDIN (ACORN COMICS)

Vasilis Meyer is a young man from Niftee, New Hampshire.

Small town life is all he ever knows. At times, ignorance is bliss. Many can thrive in this setting and never aspire for more.

In other cases, Fate intervenes.

Vasilis discovers a souvenir in his grandparents' attic. What he thinks is an innocent trinket is anything but. This is an amulet that can summon the powers of the Greek Gods!

With his newfound powers, how long can he keep this a secret in small town New Hampshire? The answer is he can’t!

THE OLYMPIAN #2 by PAUL EZA, DEE FISH & IBRAHIM AYDIN (ACORN COMICS) has been making some noise on the indie scene.

Their Kickstarter campaign just wrapped for Issue #2 but still can add late pledges. FLZ was granted a look at the issue and here’s our spoiler free review!

Eza keeps readers guessing as the issue goes forward. The initial moments lean one way, but quickly dash into another direction. The writing fully details key points so readers are never lost. At no point does it come off as a traditional theme. It builds up the true secrets of Vasilis’ discovery while not dipping all their hand. There are some solid one-liners mixed in with the supporting cast in the beginning. This moves to a more grounded approach later in the book.

Vasilis and his relationships are given ample time to grow and explore. It may not be a super powered throwdown, but still impactful. This is especially needed with a new character. The closing act cleans up some tangling threads while prepping for the next phase. No great journey is done in one page. Neither is the potential with this series.

Fish & Aydin hit the ground running with a strong opening page shot. The full image sends a direct message of what’s in store for the new hero. Pages flood with Aydin’s coloring popping some panels with powers on display. A two page spread unveils some vital information on the talisman. It gives a detailed look for readers to have a complete picture of what is happening. The imagery shows the awkwardness of Vasilis as he starts to grip what is taking place. It serves as a sound moving point to a familiar setting.

Readers will see his interactions carrying more weight as pieces are being put together. Fish focuses much detail in the reactions to guide this portion. It is very noticeable when Vasilis links up with friends. This ushers in a more exciting closing act. The art sprinkles in more thunderous imagery to compliment the actions taking place. They will catch readers attention before moving into the final stages. Once here, Vasilis’ journey is set to embark even further into mystery, wherever that may lead.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Fate steers an unlikely soul into new directions with a strong chapter following suit. Eza takes Vasilis into uncomfortable territory in attempts to forge a hero. Fish & Aydin showcase the tough learnings and responsibilities that the hero must endure. A solid addition to any superhero fans collection!
