THE MORTAL THOR #5 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 4th issue of The Mortal Thor from Marvel Comics!

The story thus far has been about Sigurd Jarlson, the man who looks like Thor and has his ability to wield a hammer. However he doesn’t have his memories or any of his god-like abilities. It’s all been a big mystery as to what’s going on, but not every mystery can stay hidden forever! So let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // The Mortal Thor #4 by Al Ewing (Writer), Pasqual Ferry (Artist), Matt Milla (Color Artist) & VC's Joe Sabino (Letterer) is an exciting issue that kicks things into high gear.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

I was not expecting the story to kick into high gear the way that it did, but I was extremely happy once I started reading it. Things so far have been a little easy going and mysterious. However this issue really hits the ground running and really has some implications for some key players in the Thor mythos.

The issue starts out with a flashback that doesn’t seem to make much sense but by the end of the issue it will. Things really get started when we see Odin in a coffee shop talking to a character we finally learn is Loki, while they discuss Sigurd’s ongoing situation. The real interesting part is the revelation made about Odin and his current status. I won’t reveal what’s said here, but it has some pretty interesting implications going forward. I don’t think it will get addressed in the immediate future, but you have to figure that it will get addressed at some point down the road. You don’t just introduce something like that revelation and leave it there.

There’s also the matter of Sigurd and the fact that he’s being questioned by the New York Police Department for the incident that took place back in issue 3. It plays out much like an episode of Law & Order, plot twist & all! Sigurd is visited by a lawyer that longtime Thor fans should recognize. However that isn’t the only twist, and that is WHO sent the lawyer. I won’t spoil it here, but all I will say is that it’s a face & name that long time readers should recognize as well.

The Artwork

Pasqual Ferry & Matt Milla do a great job with the art in this issue. The way they drew THAT character at the end of the issue is incredible and gave me a slight sense of dread that I haven’t had when reading a comic in quite some time. I also loved the way the color was used and the shading was done, that really gave it a grim look about things. There’s a lot at stake right now, and the art is really doing a great job conveying that message.

FINAL POINT: An issue that isn’t as action packed as prior issues, but still carries the punches in the story. Al Ewing is digging DEEP into the Thor mythos to tell a story that’s shaping up to be extremely interesting

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
