Star Wars: Tales From The Nightlands #3 (Dark Horse Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd and FINAL issue of Star Wars: Tales From The Nightlands from Dark Horse Comics!

This series has been a lot of fun to read and started around the perfect time of year, right before the Halloween season. It started off in the prequel series in a story featuring Anakin & Obi-Wan. From there it moved to the original trilogy and featured Luke Skywalker. Now it’s time to move into the sequel trilogy! So just what will happen when the Nightlander comes face to face with Finn, Rey & General Leia Organa? Let’s jump into it!

The Story

Cavan Scott did a really great job throughout this whole series giving it a supernatural feel in a universe that doesn’t really have a ton of that in it. Because when you think about it when it comes to supernatural like stories, the only one I can really think of is the storyline that takes place during season two of the Clone Wars in episodes 7 & 8 ,”Legacy of Terror” & “Brain Invaders” and that was mind control, zombie like creatures. This has been something a little bit more.

I really liked how the issue started out different than the previous two issues. It starts off innocently enough, a mercy mission from the Resistance in hopes of helping out a world and getting them to help the cause. However it quickly becomes clear that not everything is what it seems.

The story in this issue takes place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, so we get to see some story elements carry over from Episode 8 that were dropped entirely in Episode 9. If you know me, you should know I love a little bit of synergy when it comes to storytelling in Star Wars, and it was great to get that in this issue.

Cavan also does a great job portraying Leia as we know her in this point in time, because what she’s presented would be enough to break anyone on an emotional level. However we get to see the calm, cool, collected Leia that has been forged in battle and fire. Having grown up watching the progression of Leia’s character from where she starts to where she sends up is so very clear in the pages of this panel, and it works so well.

The Artwork

Robert Hack really does a really phenomenal job with the artwork in this issue. There are a lot of familiar characters in this issue, and Robert does a great job capturing their likeness inside the panels. Robert also does a tremendous job giving this issue such a unique look that continues to help it stand out from not just other Star Wars comics, but any other kind of comic on the shelves.

FINAL POINT: If you’re a fan of the supernatural or interweaving stories, Cavan Scott has penned the story for you. In a franchise as big as Star Wars has become, there’s absolutely some room for a little bit of spooky storytelling in it. It’s a story that is truly page turning, together with artwork that is some of the most unique art I’ve ever seen.

Overall Grade: 9.0/10
