STAR TREK: HOLO-WEEN II #4 (IDW PUBLISHING)

Star Trek: Holo-Ween #4 brings this four-issue Deep Space Nine story to a satisfying conclusion. What began as a diplomatic summit amid growing tensions between the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants gradually developed into a mystery that challenged the crew in unexpected ways.

The finale brings things full circle, embracing familiar Star Trek themes of self-discovery, confronting who you are, and learning to understand yourself on a deeper level.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Dax takes center stage in this issue, outshining the rest of the cast as the story reaches its conclusion. The creative team deserves credit for delivering a story that feels true to Deep Space Nine, balancing its mystery with the character-driven storytelling that has always been a hallmark of the franchise.

The artwork is another standout, with several pages showcasing a distinct stylization of Deep Space Nine that is absolutely beautiful. Throughout the series, the writing, characterization, and visuals have worked together to create an adventure that feels both familiar and distinctly its own.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

My biggest critique remains the lack of horror. Despite the Halloween premise, the series never quite embraces the spooky atmosphere or frightening elements I was hoping to see. Instead, it ultimately feels more like another episode of Deep Space Nine than a Star Trek story that genuinely leans into horror.

And honestly, whether that’s a problem depends on what you’re looking for. If you want another Deep Space Nine adventure with a Halloween backdrop, Holo-Ween delivers. If you’re looking for Star Trek to explore its scarier side, you might come away wanting more.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Ultimately, Holo-Ween has been an enjoyable journey, and this finale provides a fitting conclusion. While I wish the series had pushed further into its horror elements, the strong storytelling, compelling characters, beautiful artwork, and unmistakable Deep Space Nine atmosphere make this a worthwhile read. It’s a series that understands what makes Star Trek special, even if it doesn’t quite deliver the Halloween scares its premise promises.
