The Story
I was really surprised by how much I liked this book while I was reading it. I went into it totally blind, having not heard a thing about it and I came out of it really enjoying it. This book really harkens back to a simpler time in life for a lot of us, where the only thing we had to worry about was what we wanted to have in our bowl of cereal for breakfast on a Saturday morning.
You can really tell how much an influence the Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the 1960’s & 1970’s were on this book. It’s like Johnny Quest met up with Space Ghost and decided to go hang out with The Herculoids. I love the elements it borrows from some of those shows and how much it reminds me of some of the shows I grew up watching re-runs of that I took for granted then, that I would LOVE to watch now.
I love how you’re never quite sure where the story is going to go next and on each page is a new surprise waiting. Overall, it’s a supremely fun story to kick back and read if you’re looking for a change of pace or just something different from what you might be reading on a weekly basis.
The Artwork
Tom Gaadt & Craig Rousseau are in charge of the artwork for this book I really have to commend them on the job they did for the whole book. It is quite one of the most unique art styles I’ve seen in quite some time. There’s a familiarity to it with it harkening back to the Hanna-Barbera style, but with a modern look to it. I really loved taking the time to look at each panel and see if I could find any easter eggs or homages to those classic cartoons, that it really made me appreciate the art that much more.
Overall Grade: 9/10
A fantastic story that harkens back to a simpler time we all long for. It’s a fun story that is a nice change of pace from what you might be reading on a weekly basis. Together with artwork that is simply astonishing this is a book that is well worth your time to read and is a must have for any comic book reader.
