M.A.S.K. #1 by Dan Watters, Pye Parr, Pierluigi Casolino & Rus Wooton ( IMAGE Comics/Skybound)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Watters is no stranger to the EU and it’s clearly evident in the opening pages. Trakker’s chase scene is perfect for kicking the action into high gear. It connects with readers as to the confidence level he carries. Trakker’s talk with General Flagg shows his superior instincts reading the room. Its’ fueled by the deep scars inflicted by Miles Mayhem. The dialogue is sharp in delivery. Trakker knows he is controlling the room with every word. Much like his counterpart, refusing to bend is giving them their strengths.
Mayhem’s plot shows the viciousness of his mission. This comes to light with his (as alluded in the FLZ presents interview) “Shakespearian-esque” talk with a decaying prisoner. His rambling shows how unstable his mind has become. Readers can get a sizeable serving of the chess match forthcoming. This moves events into a strong finish. Trakker’s long game proves valuable as he draws out his attacker. The aftermath leads to a definitive statement as to who’s running this play. It is complemented with Mayhem’s epilogue. Both leave fans excited for what’s to come next.
Parr and Casolino craft the opening sequence in a perfect manner. The tone cranks everything to 11 as the speed chase commences. Trakker’s gleeful toying of his pursuers sets the mood for his interrogation. It provides a great counter to Mayhem’s operatives. One victim is shown in horrible condition. Parr’s attention to the decaying condition adds to the horrible reality. A solid mid page shot shows more torture taking place as Mayhem’s quest goes to the extreme.
Once readers are moved back to Trakker’s questioning, the back and forth takes center stage. Trakker’s will never falters when the hard questions are asked, save one moment. The tension is thick as no give from either side looks possible. The art teases something far more devious in Mayhem’s time. His “speech” to his captive is given a creative perspective, right to the reveal. This buys some time before an action packed finish to Trakker’s ordeal. Mayhem’s epilogue is more subtle in delivery but nails the mysterious landing via full page. An excellent first impression is made for sure.
FINAL GRADE: 9.5
The latest addition to the EU doesn’t miss the mark with a spectacular debut chapter. Watters’ writing establishes the complexity of Trakker to match Mayhem’s insanity. Parr and Casolino create a high octane thrill you can’t walk away from. Buckle in & get ready for an exciting EU saga to begin!
