The Story
Al Ewing & Tom Waltz have written quite possibly the most compelling issue of a comic I’ve read in a long time. Of course when you deal with the characters at play in this story, you’re going to get some explosive results. Knull, Thanos & Hela are all deadly in their own right. However directly pit 2 of the 3 against each other you’re going to get a fight of epic proportions.
The fight between Thanos & Knull takes up a good portion of the issue and it’s as incredible as you’d expect. There’s also a moment in that fight that made me genuinely yell out loud “Oh my god!!” Because it’s a moment that I did not see coming at all, and is one of the most shocking things I’ve seen in a comic in a long time. I won’t spoil it at all, but just know it’s going to have a lot of people talking online.
There’s also a focus on Hela in this issue and just what she’s up to. She’s appears to be testing out just how powerful she is, and how her newfound power is developing. She also simultaneously is apparently moving against those who might stand in her way. She’s also appears to be perhaps a little to confident about how things are going for her, and I get the feeling that’s going to come back to haunt her before everything is said and done.
Then there’s the ending of the issue, which adds yet another wrinkle into the story. Is it another stepping stone for Kull? Or could it be a real test for him? Only time will tell, but it’s sure to be an incredible journey.
The Artwork
Juanan Ramirez & Erick Arciniega continue to an amazing job with the artwork in this series. It’s one of the best looking issues on the stands this week from start to finish. I also really love the night and day look they gave the color sequences in this issue. It’s such an amazing dichotomy that’s so classic. I really loved the action sequences and how visceral they were. You can really get the feeling that Juanan Ramirez & Erick Arciniega are holding nothing back when it comes to the artwork.
FINAL POINT: Al Ewing & Tom Waltz are on fire with this series. Each issue is better than the previous and elevates the stakes for the next issue. Together with artwork that is the best on the stands this week, this is an issue you CANNOT MISS for any reason!
