One thing is for certain for Adams: He has no fear in bringing the weirdness out of Los Angeles. Seeing the fast food battle is prime example of how to have fun with this book. The writing sees a transplant from Gotham come and crash the party. Anytime you get a legitimate Condiment King appearance, you know you’re in for a show. The food fight doesn’t disappoint in bringing the absurdity to the chapter. It helps balance the heavier drama with who shows up.
If you are not familiar with Major Force and Kyle Rayner, it is very complicated with one of the lowest points in comics attached to it. Google at your own risk. Adams steers into the drama without rehashing that incident. Tying it in with the current events of Justice League Unlimited is a nice touch to explain it. This also pushes Rayner to have a personal conversation with Odyssey. It’s a safe landing spot before Hal Jordan’s brief time. While short, it gives a solid feel good moment to bow out on.

Kudrański (w/ Herms - Rayner) & Xermánico (w/ Fajardo Jr. - Jordan) split art duties for this go-around. The opening scenes with Major Force go exactly as one may think. A full page punch kicks off events as Rayner “welcomes: him in. This sparks brief action until one panel drops a major bombshell on events. It provides the break needed for the Food Fight to start cooking. It doesn’t steal much thunder from Rayner’s disappointed reactions in hearing about Force’s status.
Readers watch as the quieter panels with Odyssey expose the pain he carries inside. Their expressions tell a story of two broken souls. The gloom doesn’t last forever as the Food Fight becomes more out of control. A hilarious full page image shows new ingredients added into the melee soup. The image is a perfect one to transition to Jordan’s space escapades. A bold full page escape revs up the excitement as Jordan attempts an impossible feat. The result is a sure-fire fan favorite moment as the threat gets dealt with. A great compliment to what the rest of the issue brought.
FINAL GRADE: 8.4
Kyle Rayner sees a ghost from his past as his new hometown city cooks up more mischief along the way. Adams balances the heavier drama with more fun moments. The art teams bring out the emotional scars with a side of laughs in the art. You’ve never seen Los Angeles looking this emerald green!
