FANTASTIC FOUR #14 (MARVEL COMICS)

Life can be a game of numbers in certain aspects.

In the case of Marvel’s first family, it is an everyday fixture. However, a current problem seems to be unsolvable. Make matters worse is the impact it has outside the Baxter Building.

FANTASTIC FOUR #14 by Ryan North, Ramón Rosanas, Edgar Delgado & Joe Caramagna presents one of the more unique stories in recent memory.

Let’s take a deeper dive into this equation.

FANTASTIC FOUR #14 by Ryan North, Ramón Rosanas, Edgar Delgado & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As stated in previous reviews, North takes many gambles involving the stories in this series. His latest venture plays into the heavily influenced science aspects of mental processing of information. An equation that shuts down comprehension freezes every human in its’ tracks. Not even the biggest brain in the MCU is avoiding this issue. Readers see as two unlikely heroes are forced into the spotlight.

Jo and Nikki wind up having to investigate this dilemma. The writing shows how uncomfortable they are with this issue until they have to conquer the worry. It leads into some fun cameos before they find a possible lead. At this stage, the writing gets very intricate in how the riddle is solved. It is vintage FF in delivery. The fallout is a bit wild but makes perfect sense considering the characters involved. A solid one and done issue to appease readers before the next celebration chapter for 65 years.

The art locks in on the family bonding of the group before the trouble starts. A solid two page spread welcomes the equation to the center stage. This leads to more close-ups of Jo and Mikki cyphering through the odd occurrence. Readers watch as another Marvel figure is caught up in the insanity. This leads into settling in on breaking down the problem once and for all.

Readers tag along as the pair’s overwhelming issues dive further into lost corners. Once a possible light comes through, their expressions speak volumes as they go about business. It leads into a complicated finish due to the hijinks involved with the solution. Any other series, the panels may not click. Fantastic Four has never been a series to fall into “normal” circumstances.

The book also has part 3 of “Mind and Matter”, celebrating Disability Pride Month with Hawkeye and Echo joining the ensemble cast. This has been a great story with the Hobgoblin manipulating the Mind Stone. It sets up a solid finale in the next issue of Wolverine.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

An equation for the ages challenges two unlikely heroes in this very different story. North pushes boundaries the late King would be proud of with great art to match. This one is gonna be a doozy to talk about at the shops this week.
