STORY OVERVIEW:

Dr. Doom batted in all of his enemies and unleashed his secret spell that would finally defeat them all. However, what he didn’t count on is that it was going to destroy and kill everything and everyone. Now in the year 2099, Doom tries to go back in time and stop himself from taking everyone out as he is lonely in the future. He has failed miserably in every attempt to fix the past. The only thing he has succeeded in is creating a bunch of Doombots to keep him company and help him in his journey. Now his Doombots have retrieved what is left of Ultron, so what can go wrong there?

WRITING:

This one-shot does a great job of showing a different side of Doom. Frank Tieri takes the unlikeable Doom and shows a more remorseful and softer side of one of the biggest villains in the Marvel Universe. The remorse and regret he shows is uncharacteristic, yet in a way refreshing. Tieri makes the reader feel bad for the evil Doom, while also making him somewhat of a flawed hero in the process. The character study that is portrayed in this issue really gets the reader thinking. But don’t worry Tieri still brings a great deal of action and epic feel to this issue as well.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue is fantastic and captures the essence of the story perfectly. Von Randal brings an epic look with his artwork in this issue. The characters look amazing and really put the reader in the middle of the conflict. The Doom designs and Ultron designs in particular really steal the issue and look amazing. The action scenes play out as they are written and leave little to the imagination. The color choices by Andrew Dalhouse make the artwork pop and draw the readers’ eyes to each panel. The art team really knocked this issue out of the park.

Final Thoughts:

Doom 2099: Rage of Doom #1 is a tremendous one-shot with a lot to offer comic fans across the board. The story is captivating, while the artwork captures the essence of the story nearly perfectly. The only real qualm I have is that this is a one and done and not an on-going series. This should be a slam dunk pick up at the shops this week and with some cool covers it should also be a must grab for collectors as well.

FINAL GRADE: 9.2/10
