DNX #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of DNX!

DNX is the latest event story taking place in the Marvel Comics Universe! The X-Men and Fantastic Four are taking center stage for this story and they have to stop the villainous terrorist group 3K from unleashing the dreaded X-Virus and changing the world forever! Let’s jump into it!

The Story

Jed MacKay continues to do an incredible job building this story up in a really different way that isn’t going for shock and awe. Yes, there are moments of that in the series thus far however it’s not relying on those to get it’s story across. Rather it’s taking a deliberate pace that feels slowly like the powder keg is building pressure right before it’s about to blow. Given all of the major event stories Marvel has had going on, it does make for a nice change of pace and some very compelling storytelling.

I really enjoy how the story is just on the edge of getting out of control from the characters perspective. They’re in Philadelphia, they’re trying to stop 3K from activating the X-Virus and saving the day. However at every turn it seems like The Chairman has the perfect counterplay for them. For every move they make, no matter how precise, he has a counter move. It’s this style that also has the tension so high, and feels like they’re just on the edge of losing it all and failing.

MacKay really raises the stakes in this issue and even offers a very compelling twist, especially considering the news that was announced this past weekend at New York Comic Con. Whether it will be enough to change the tide remains to be seen, but it does provide some needed relief for the heroes. It also sets up for a very interesting next couple of issues which should be a blast to read!

The Artwork

Federico Vincentini & David Curiel are in charge of the artwork for the issue and it is truly some spectacular work done by the pair in this issue. Things get really crazy in the issue and there were several moments where the story left me very surprised and the artwork was right there to further elevate my shock and awe. The art in this issue doesn’t feel like your standard X-Men issue art, it feels like it’s an elevated version of that. From start to finish every panel is so incredibly drawn with a level of detail and care that really astound me and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

Overall Grade: 8/10

Jed MacKay really ups the ante with this issue with a very compelling story that blends beautifully with the artwork. This event is quickly becoming must read material, and you’re not going to want to miss out on the ending of the issue!
