DEATHSTROKE: THE TERMINATOR #2 by Tony Fleecs, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ivan Plascencia, & Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Fleecs presents Slade at his most dangerous. The loss of Wintergreen is highlighted via a flashback sequence. Slade’s dialogue is cold as he processes life after losing his eye. There’s much anger behind his words. Slade’s family is the only thing he truly cares about. Taking that away from him in any aspect begs for trouble. This mentality carries over into present day. Once in the current situation, the story is very streamlined moving forward.
Readers watch as Slade does what he does best. There’s high level action sequences abound. His interrogation of his attackers is very direct, including its aftermath. Even in a wounded state, Slade is unstoppable to the average attack. The dialogue goes completely business as Slade arrives at his safe house. The audience sees the ramifications of his attacker. This leads into a wild sequence for the final act. There’s no shying away from the violence on display. It’s what everyone came for. What’s the crazier surprise is the final page. New guests have shown up with many questions behind their involvement. Buckle in as this is going to get more intense until the job is done.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Di Giandomenico & Plascencia never steer clear of Slade’s strengths with the art. The flashback sequence shows his somber looks while processing what has happened. It is a rare vulnerable display which few can get out of him. Wintergreen’s stoic poise helps guide readers through this tough interaction. Slade is now very angry and wants revenge. Fast forward to the present & it’s very clear nothing has changed.
The bullets start flying fast as he goes to work. A fantastic half panel shows him dismiss a circle of attackers. The scenes are brutal and never backs down from his rage taking over. If anyone is looking for a calm point, his trek to a safe house is the only point. His search for funds leads to a few failing reactions. This doesn’t last long as the attack on the safe house kickstarts another round of violence. The helicopter fight boils over with excitement. It leaves a superb silhouette of Slade emerging from its’ smoke. The closing will have readers talking until next round. Two guests appear via full page with bad intentions on display. A perfect close for Slade and one that won’t be forgotten on this new comic book day.
FINAL GRADE: 8.4
Slade’s revenge tour takes a detour as clues start emerging through the fire. Fleecs leans into Slade’s expertise with a solid scrip . Di Giandomenico & Plascencia unload full rounds of fury with the exciting action panels. Slade is back and the DCU isn’t ready for what’s happening here!
