WRITING:
This issue continues the Hanson’s journey down the mouth of madness. Cullen Bunn continues to make their lives hell well dealing with the strange things going on in their new neighborhood. Having no one believe them, even the police, really isolates the family and makes them question their own sanity. Bunn really gets the creepy element of horror and gives the reader a front row seat for the family’s decline. However, the most effective element of this issue is what happens with Monique and Gary. Trying to be good neighbors and assuring the Hanson’s that they aren’t going crazy, rather there is something evil at hand. This obviously doesn’t go well with the others and leads to a sad and vicious scenario. Bunn does such an excellent job of hooking you in for the next issue and beyond with his storytelling.
ARTWORK:
The artwork vividly captures the madness and unease surrounding the Hansons. Fico Ossio heightens the horror by contrasting the gated community’s picture-perfect calm with the disturbing events unfolding within it. Silhouettes and shadows build tension, while the burned up boat and deer carcass in the garbage can creep you out. Ulises Arreola’s colors reinforce the setting’s seemingly ordinary appearance, then spotlight the strange occurrences, giving the artwork an effective, surreal quality. Andworld Design’s clear, easy-to-follow lettering strengthens the unsettling tone, making every whisper feel personal. The art team comes to gather and brings this unsettling story to life.
