The Eye Collector #1 (Image Comics)

Have you ever read a comic that has you scratching your head after reading it?

The Eye Collector #1 written by Jonathan Ball & G.M.B. Chomichuk (Image Comics) is one of those books... but in a good way.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

I'm not going to pretend I fully understand everything this book is trying to say after one issue. In fact, I think if someone told me they completely understood it, I'd probably be a little suspicious.

The story mixes the Apollo space program, cosmic horror, and the old nursery rhyme about the Man in the Moon into something that feels much deeper than it first appears. One line in particular stuck with me:

"If you read the old legends, the man in the moon is a thief. But the legends are wrong... although he does take things. But, he does something worse. He gives."

That's the kind of line that makes you stop reading and go, "Wait... what?"

The more I thought about it, the more it felt like this comic is less about monsters and more about knowledge. About what happens when you get answers you probably weren't supposed to have in the first place. The narrator even says, "I know everything, now," and somehow it sounds more like a curse than a superpower.

LET’S TALK CONCRETE!

What I really liked is that the book doesn't spoon-feed you anything. It moves fast, throws ideas at you, and trusts you to figure it out. The downside is that some readers are probably going to be confused from page one. Honestly, I was confused too. But I was interested enough to keep turning the pages, and that's what matters.

This is a solid start that reads quickly and leaves you with plenty to think about afterward. It definitely won't be for everyone, but if you like stories that make you work a little for the answers, this one is worth checking out.

And while I'm giving this first issue an 8.5, I have a feeling this score could go up once the entire series is out. Right now, I’m still putting all the pieces together.
