STORY OVERVIEW:

Back in 1987 Capes Inc. suffered its darkest day when Chronodile aimed to destroy the city and take out the heroes. The fight would’ve been lost if it wasn’t for Omni-Man dropping in, and Captain Cosmic disappearing and returning with full power and opening a rift that sucked both Chronodile and him into it. Fast forward to the present and Captain Cosmic has returned, and now the question is when will Chronodile return as well. Well, this is going on, the heroes are trying to get back to a sense of normal since the attack and betrayal by Big Brain. Marshall is now the leader of Capes, and since his Meteor Twin brother was killed, he has no real powers or so we think. Something strange starts to happen and not only do Marshall’s powers come back stronger than ever, but the threat from the past they all feared has shown up as well.

WRITING:

This issue starts the post Big Brain Era of Capes off in a huge way. Robert Kirkman masterfully balances the separate stories going on, well also introducing a new threat from the past. Kirman’s ability to bring the reader into the personal lives of the superhero’s is what truly sets this story apart from other hero books. The personal relationships and everyday life problems bring a sense of reality to the series. At the same time Kirkman also nails the big epic feel of a superhero story as well. Introducing new and bigger threats and dealing with the different powers and challenges that go along with them.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue is tremendous and shows both superhero action and personal life pieces to great effect. Mark Englert nails the character designs and makes every character feel heroic and important. His design of Chronodile really makes him look like a massive threat that will surely be a big problem for the team. The real heart of the artwork though is the dramatic moments between the characters. Englert really nails making the characters feel real and relatable. This is truly the heart of the story and in my opinion, what sets this series apart from other series on the shelves.

Final Thoughts:

Capes #4 brings the reader into the next era of the team, well capturing all the emotions and humor that make this series great. The questions that are left unanswered set up intrigue for where the story is going. At the same time adding a huge and new threat to pump up the action is a sure-fire way to grab any readers’ attention. This series has been fantastic and there are no signs of it slowing down. If you haven’t jumped on board with this series already, grab a copy at the shop this week, and add it to your Pull List.
