BLEEDING HEARTS #6 (DC COMICS)

Holidays are supposed to be a fun time, right?

Poke would disagree. After his dead heart started beating again, things haven’t been right. His zombie tendencies have changed. This has caused many problems with hi best friend Mush.

Complicating matters more is the growing friendship with humans. On Outbreak Day, the humans should be prey. For Poke, that isn’t worth celebrating anymore.

BLEEDING HEARTS #6 by Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, Matt Hollingsworth, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS) delivers an impactful chpater.

Let’s take a closer look into the latest.

BLEEDING HEARTS #6 by Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, Matt Hollingsworth, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Camp knows how to get the most emotion out of the undead with this series. In the midst of the celebration, Poke’s true feelings start creeping out. The tension with Mush is undeniable. This leads into a heated confrontation once again. Their issues have been slowly climbing for quite some time. It results in a moment that has been held back long enough. The result is a painful reaction to the mounting rejections of what has now happened. Readers won’t be ready for this resolution.

The other key player in this issue is Rabbit. Her attempts to survive Outbreak Day brow bleaker with each path taken. The writing shows her bravery in the face of certain doom. Camp throws in a monster surprise to shake up events at this stage. It also shows a heartbreaking truth come to life. The code of survival is universal in this setting. This pushes events into a superb finish. Nothing will be the same after this chapter concludes.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Morian & Hollingsworth lean into the horror and dark humor that only a zombie apocalypse can bring. The opening sequence with a human running goes south very fast. Readers watch as Mush’s smile is met with disgust by Poke. This mood of terror doesn’t slow down here. It carries into Rabbit’s desperate attempts to stay alive. Readers watch as each panel ramps up the fear taking hold.

It is met with a pair of excellent two page splashes to begin a new direction. The art hones in on the emotions running high in this moment. An excellent half panel shows a heartwarming exchange, if only briefly. Readers watch as this feel-good segment crashes quickly to reality. Knowing someone can’t be saved, the cold understanding of survival takes center stage. It balances out the brutal exchange between Poke and Mush. The fallout crafts an undeniable close. A daunting full page sets off the close, which leaves many questions up in the air. Fantastic work.

FINAL GRADE: 9.7

Poke’s world crashes down around him as Outbreak Day brings sorrow instead of joy. Camp pens a heavily emotional tale with phenomenal writing. Morian & Hollingsworth never shy away from the grittiness and difficult choices of this world. An amazing display of powerful storytelling.
