BIZARRO: YEAR NONE #1 by Kevin Smith , Eric Carrasco, Nick Pitarra, Michael Garland & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Smith and Carrasco tap into the differences of worlds to move events to a steady pace in this chapter. Olsen and White’s struggles to grasp this new world stand out. This is an area than one of them never find themselves setting in. Readers watch as Olsen slowly becomes caught up in moments only to throw pause when realizing what’s happening.
Readers watch as the curiosity starts fading into more darker territory. Bizarro’s claims tend to be thought of as mis-usage of words. White’s journalism skills prove this to be anything but. Even after he has a great talk with Olsen, the mood never lets Perry escape the truth. This especially comes true in the close. The final act shows something that appears very wholesome until reality sets in. Once here, the ruse is up on what is being played out. How this will ultimately play out is very up in the clouds.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Pitarra & Garland open with the awkward moments of Lois Lane and Bizarro. Their reactions show much range in keeping readers guessing. This aura follows Olsen and White to the Daily Planet. Perry’s full shot speaks volumes. There’s a true sense of curiosity to what this world brings in the panels.
As Olsen tries finding a place here, the panels showcase his misplacement. Even Bizarro seeing a family at a diner comes off jagged. Readers watch as Perry and Jimmy try formulating a plan but discover more than bargained for. The silhouette discovery leads to more uncomfortable moments. It stages the closing act rather well. The pages show the brutal reality of this new world as Bizarro does something shocking. The tone in his reaction eludes to more dangers forthcoming with no clear path in sight.
FINAL GRADE: 8.3
Jimmy Olsen and Perry White find themselves sinking fast into a world completely upside down. Smith and Carrasco take Bizarro and his earth into darker territory. Pitarra & Garland playfully twist the visions unfolding for a unique look. A series fitting for its’ complex lead.
