STORY OVERVIEW:

Monica and Sam head out to the middle of the forest in search of where Nigel may have hidden the bodies of his victims. This remote area is now being developed into gated communities. As they search the grounds, they start to find paint cans with remains in them. Monica is relieved as she has found the final resting place of her brother Daniel. But that sense of relief doesn’t last long as she accidentally discovers that Sam was involved with at least the hiding of the bodies. This causes her to flee, with Sam in hot pursuit. As Monica gets away, all Sam can do is prepare for her final bloody stand.

WRITING:

This is as perfect of a penultimate issue as you can hope for. Patrick Horvath does an awesome job of building the tension and suspense to a fever pitch. Horvath teases the danger Monica finds herself in, then gives the reader hope for her safe escape, before flipping the script yet again. The yo-yo feeling really creates a tremendous amount of anticipation and suspense. The lengths that Monica went through to locate her brother are nothing in comparison to the lengths she goes to stay alive. Sam’s cool and calm demeanor only makes the horror of the story more intense.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue is much like the art in the rest of the series, high quality and on brand for the story. Patrick Horvath does a great job of continuing the story book art style in this issue. This makes the grizzly, and gory scenes in the story feel even more depraved and horrible. The detail and brutality of the killing scenes are graphic and unsettling which really adds to the atmosphere of the story.

Final Thoughts:

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring #5 gives a major final push going into the finale of the series. The table is set well, and the stakes are raised all the way up headed into the last issue. All that is left is to see how this will play out and finish the story. This series has been fantastic and I’m sure the finale will be a huge payoff. The countdown is on to the finish and I for one couldn’t be closer to the edge of my seat.

FINAL GRADE: 10/10
