BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #52 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez. Vicente Cifuentes, Luis Guerrero & Steve Wands (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Waid wraps events up with an action packed finish. Seeing the World’s Finest possessed in such a manner provides a true challenge for any opposition. It is very evident early of how effective they are in the battlefield. The writing stages their initial impact with a high mark. It leads to more pressure put on The Warlord and Robin to solve this issue. This becomes more complicated as Tyrant Rex is relishing his upcoming victory.
Readers watch as Robin’s pleas to the Warlord are met with some friction. Ideology doesn’t match for the pair. Their banter reflects the sinking feeling now setting in. This pushes events to the final stand. Once here, the moment shifts to one character’s solid deductions. Waid stages this as a huge turning point and rightfully so. The result gets momentum shifting in a new direction. It allows the story to wrap up events with some mutual respect as all parties involved subscribe to different methods of achieving good in a wild land.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Gutiérrez & the art team open with a page without dialogue. This allows Robin to showcase his stealth moves to take out an adversary. The move also delays a superb page of the Finest heading into action in response. After some fast action panels, the attention turns to Warlord and Robin. Their frustration of events lean into a conflict of methods. As the heroes approach Rex’s whereabouts, the mood instantly flips into a desperation feel.
The half page panel of Robin crashing the party catapults the final stand to begin. A solid use of a nine panel grid moves the heroes closer to defeat. This allows one to make a risky play. A full page shot sees a dangerous trap laid. Readers watch as it proves impactful with the reactions of the Finest taking over the scene. Panels swell up with the combat, ending with a noteworthy finish. The epilogue sends parties onto their respective directions with the Warlord’s face saying all that needs to be said.
FINAL GRADE: 8.6
The battle for Skartaris concludes on a solid note with much action following! Waid brings out the best of one hero as the writing escalates matters fast. Gutiérrez & the team rasie the stakes with a masterful job. Never a dull moment unfolding in this series!
