The Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity #1 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the FIRST issue of The Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity from Marvel Comics!

Coming out of the recent storyline where Norman Osborn took over the roll of Spider-Man, and the other members of the Spider-family comes Spider-Versity! Just what happens when 6 members of the Spider-family get together for a little bit of training? Let’s jump into it!

The Story

So what exactly happens when you get Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Silk, Arana, Spider-Boy and Spider-Girl together to train with none other than Norman Osborn himself? It’s a wild scenario but one that plays out extremely well by the end of the issue.

So just how exactly are they going to be trained to be ready for anything? Perhaps a simulation room like the X-Men have used in the past? Maybe a sparring session between them? How about Norman flies in on his green goblin glider and throwing pumpkin bombs! No joke either! It’s a wild situation, but like I said it plays out so well and is so interesting that by the end of it you can’t wait to see how it plays out.

The most intriguing part of the issue is the ending, after they’ve all agreed to take on the training there’s a scene that takes place outside their training gym that should look a little familiar if you’ve read this week’s issue of Amazing Spider-Man #27. It’s not required to read that issue before this one, but you’ll be a little confused if you don’t.

It’s a solid start to the series and it should be interesting to see where this goes and who they might run into. Also I’m not convinced on Norman Osborn being fully in the good. I just want to make sure I’m clear on that.

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Guru-eFX are in charge of the artwork for the issue and they both did a spectacular job with it. It should be incredibly familiar to fans of Spider-Man. I really liked the way the sequence played out between Norman and the Spiders and how it looked like Norman really wanted to kill them. The overall sense of dread and anticipation was really coming through with the artwork.

Overall Grade: 8/10

As far as first issues go, this is a very solid start. An intriguing premise together with very familiar artwork make this an issue that fans are not going to want to miss.
