ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #17 by Jason Aaron, Juan Ferreyra & Becca Carey (DC COMICS) delivers on high drama in its’ latest chapter.

Aaron makes this a horror story very fast in the opening pages. Lois Lane running form the creature gets stopped cold in her tracks. The vision of Jimmy Olsen begging for death to escape makes a bold statement! This escalates even further when Superman and Hawkman assess the situation. The dialogue is firm as the grizzled Hawkman knows one direction: forward. This clashes with Superman’s more philosophical approach. The result offers little offense as the beast imposes its’ will.
Once Superman has a small inkling of how to fight back, the story shifts gears. Readers watch as the noble hero makes a gutsy call. It is a move that only Superman (no matter what timestream) could pull off. The result proves worthy of the victory it acquires. Its’ fallout sends a clear statement of who is champion of this universe. Not everything is a win for Supes this chapter however. Aaron showcases a sub-plot concluding only one way. The writhing also fuels some nightmares as Brainiac gets the epilogue. The visceral message sent will shake up some readers as this new Absolute world looks to be getting colder by the day. Excellent work in the script.

Ferreyra might be the perfect artist for this version of Parasite. The full image of Jimmy Olsen and more trapped is absolutely terrifying. Watching Jimmy’s face beg for death is a site few will forget. This moves into a superb two page spread showing the “heroes” breaking down an attack plan. Carey’s lettering shines in these panels. Their moves have little effect which causes more friction between the pair. This only escalates as events move forward.
Superman’s face-to-face with Lois feels classic in this trying situation. It also provides a clue for victory. The amount of detail Ferreyra puts in on Parasite’s teeth is incredible. This sets up a series of strong two page splash images. The first welcomes Superman’s plan to the forefront. Following that is a trip inside Hawkman’s head. This visual presentation is amazing. Readers will see what is unlocked as a message is left for later. Closing out the splashes is a definitive close on the fight. Tensions still run high to the epilogue. Watching Brainiac’s actions will make most scarred and shaken. The final full page image puts a dark exclamation point on events! Stunning work with the visuals here.

With Metropolis on the line, Superman must find strength within to combat Parasite. Aaron mashes the worlds of horror and heroics together for a huge win. Ferreyra absolutely crushes every aspect of the art this issue. He NEEDS to be back on a Superman title sooner than later. An intense read that few will see what’s coming next! Don’t miss it.
